1878-P VAM-2 Lines In Liberty

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
2 I²2 – A¹b (Doubled Reverse) (189) I-2 R-4
Obverse I²2- Doubled bottoms of E PLURIBUS and both sides of U in UNUM. Left side of all left stars slightly doubled. First 8 doubled slightly at top of the inside of the lower loop. 7 doubled on the left side and tripled on the right side of the vertical shaft.
Reverse A¹b- Doubled reverse most apparent in the lower left of wreaths and in lettering of UNITED, AMERICA, and ONE DOLLAR. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing.
Comments:

  1. The obverse is shared with 1878-P VAM-14.4, which is a later die state.
  2. The VAM-2 is a common to scarce variety. Reverse A1b is unique to VAM-2. There are three extra feathers on the right, and two tiny feathers on the left.
  3. The 1878-P VAM-2 is an 8 tailfeather coin. An 8 tailfeather attribution guide is available on VAMworld.
