1878-P VAM-197 Doubled UR-BUS UNU, Missing Feather
Revision July 2004 by Bill Van Note
197(revised) II 7 · B2f (Doubled UR-BUS UNU, Missing Feather) (180, 194) I-2 R-4
Obverse II 7– Slightly doubled UR-BUS UNU at top inside of letters towards coin center.
Reverse B2f -
1. Let it be known that it is thought that later die states have a repaired or reworked (D) on the reverse. EDS is 2-sided PL, so the obverse die was re-polished after the VAM 134 run ended. EDS PL examples appear to be very scarce if not rare.
2. The II7 Obverse is also found as the obverse of 1878-P VAM-134.
3. Feather completely missing next to eagle's right leg. R in Trust not broken. Different die than VAMs 196, 198, and 199-2.
LVA Plate Photos:
The crack from the bust point to the first left star might be useful in making attributions. This crack is also seen on PL EDS coins.
The r in trust is intact and there is local die polish.
The feather is entirely missing.
Distinctive and unique reverse die cracks can help identify at least later stage examples. These do not exist on EDS PL coins.
Unique die polish lines by the bow may help identify some specimens. This does not exist on EDS PL coins.
Die polish line visible on most examples; however, it is not there on PL EDS examples.
