1878-P VAM-15 Doubled Liberty

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. Obverse discovered by Francis Klaes, June 1963.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
15 II/I 1 A1e (Doubled LIBERTY) (180) I-3 R-4
Obverse II/I 1 - Second obverse design type, II, reimpressed over first type, I. Doubled LIBERTY with large shift to left. Doubled R in PLURIBUS. All left and right stars are doubled. First 8 and 7 doubled at top.

1. The 1878 VAM-15 is an 8 tailfeather coin with the A1e reverse. This reverse is characterized by unique tailfeathers next to the eagle's wings including a spiked feather on the right side that is often used as a diagnostic when paired with the two curved feathers on the left side(see photo below). Please note that this reverse is shared with the VAM-10, which is not a Top 100 variety. Thus, the obverse must also be examined for distinction.

Most notable about VAM-15 is the strongly doubled LIBERTY on the obverse. Also, significant raised metal inside the lower loop of the 8's and the tops of the digits are doubled.
