That's a good question. It requires a interest, desire and skillset beyond numismatics. The best numismatic macro photos I have were taken with a ink pen and check paid to the order of @messydesk

Are you talking about microscope close-ups or full coin pictures? I'm using two entirely different setups for these. Full-coin setup is optimized for quality, microscope optimized for workflow.

This is my setup: Nikon DSLR, 60MM micro lens, 2 extension tubes, excellent copy stand, cable release, RAW file sizes setting, mirror up setting, Photoshop. I get about 4x lifesize at closest focus point.
When in doubt... don't.
