1922 Peace Dollar Question
Newbie here so please forgive my ghastly vam skills and knowledge. I have several 1922 Peace dollars (no mint mark) that appear to have an extra branch on the reverse. I saw two pictures online of a similar look, but they are dead links. Appreciate any guidance.

Re: 1922 Peace Dollar Question
That's a clash from the top of Liberty's head. Quite common and not listed as a feature in the VAM catalog.

Re: 1922 Peace Dollar Question
Just an observation. If the clash is common then it should absolutely be listed in the variety catalog --- because that is where you want new collectors to go to find answers. Leaving it out only frustrates and confuses new collectors of varieties.
Re: 1922 Peace Dollar Question
For clarity, typical clash marks ARE mentioned in the VAM book and on our Attribution 101 page on this site, they just don't warrant a separate listing. To me, there's nothing wrong with telling the budding variety enthusiast that the first thing they spot isn't particularly special. It's almost no different than that first encounter with strike doubling.

Thanks! That makes things a lot clearer.

Re: 1922 Peace Dollar Question
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I found a few items on a 1922 and a 1923 and I promise I'll stop, lol. This is just pretty cool getting into it. On the 1922 D, it looks like maybe a die crack through TRVST; and on the reverse at the top right corner of the eagles shoulder--is that anything of note?
With respect to the 1923, it looks like a hair line (die crack--I think that's the terminology?) starting at IN GOD WE TRUST and making its way up to L in Liberty and surfaces again below the Y. I did look at some samples (the same type of die crack appears on the 1922-D), but I'm not sure on the 1923. It may also just be wear and tear?
In any event, thank all and I'll review the VAMS in their entirety before posting a pic again.

I suspect this is a bit more unique than a strike doubling.vampicker wrote: ↑Mon Dec 05, 2022 12:21 pmFor clarity, typical clash marks ARE mentioned in the VAM book and on our Attribution 101 page on this site, they just don't warrant a separate listing. Bottom pic showing TRVST on 1922 D with caption "die crack _maybe" looks like VAM 2H
