1878-? Obverse Only... Break the Buckle?...

Post by TheYokel » Wed Nov 14, 2018 8:56 pm

Bought a sweet buckle with a Morgan along for the ride, but the screws that hold the backplate on are soldered to the dang buckle...

Is there anything you can tell about a 78 from the front that would tell you anything about the coin? The details are in pretty good shape, and I'm tempted to break the buckle to find out what the chicken looks like...

What would you do, lol?...

My luck the bird will have a bubble with the words "you're an idiot..." Graffiti'd in it, lol...

Edit: or we can try to VAM it from the front only before I break it free and see if anyone was correct lol...

It's a II obverse, so it's going to be a 7TF. Looks like the 4th right star is broken, so I'd look first at the 131 and 186 VAMs. Could also be a Rev. of 79, as there are many of them with broken 4th right star.

So either way not worth breaking it out at this point though? Just leave her where she's been and enjoy her?

Not like it's a MS coin or anything... Looks like she's had the lips polished off her lol...

I'll delete the post. I thought we'd have more fun figuring it out than that, my apologies...

Edit: says i can't delete it. You can feel free to if you'd like. No need to clutter the board...

On the contrary, I don't see a need to delete the thread. Spend some time looking through the 1878 varieties I mentioned. 1878 is one of the easier years to attribute, and you might be able to do it from the obverse alone here. It'll be a bit of a challenge, but you might be able to get it.

I would leave it in the buckle for the coolness factor, since removing it would leave you with a damaged, polished coin and a damaged buckle.

Smells sorta like an S mintmark....you have some polishing lines in the hair that may prove helpful.

I would bet on it being a 1878s. That polishing line in the lowers hair, plus the overall appearance, says it might be vam69, or one of a couple others.
