my first big VAM 'pick

Post by DHalladay » Sun Sep 11, 2022 2:09 pm

It was almost 22 years ago at Heritage (back when there weren't a zillion eyes looking for 'picks):

When in doubt... don't.

Absolutely those were the days of easy pickins and developing high vam prices
To many people entering vam mkts, some trying to get rich, and others throwing
wild money around to assemble PCGS sets etc

I thought it all crazy at time and sold thousands of coins into the hyped hysteria
Turns out i was dead zuke correct as i am not a PCGS fan or of their sets IMHO
Now we have seen & continue to see Expensive sets broken up and sold for
fractions of actual costs, which really hurts the vam sport.

Nice to hear from Dennis on his 1st vam pick. I think my 1st pick was 1882 o/s
Vam 3 Bold in PCGS ms64 which i ended up buying about 30 in next few yrs
Then i began buying high grade common DMPL beauties like 1880 S vams 8-12
in 66dmpl-68 dmpl. Buying PL/DMPL high grades proved extremely lucrative
as America loves flashy mirrored Morgans.

Us old timers look back and marvel at yesteryear vam prices as well as stories
associated with pickin vams. I most enjoyed and profited from vamming my
already large Morgan collection. Buying all those large estates cheap and raw
allowed me to grade and attrib, thus increasing values substancially.

A super fun time in coins
