1878-S lots going on
1878-S lots going on
Hello VAM world:
I was hoping someone can guide me in attributing my 1878S coin. I am new to the VAM world and a bit lost. I notice that it has a Broken R in trust, open G in God, spiked eye, broken 4th star, and doubling in "E Pluribus". I would appreciate any insight and have full confidence in the knowledge this forum has to offer. I included some pics.
Thank you!!!

Re: 1878-S lots going on
Hi
2 questions
1) is there doubled on liberty?
2)can you try to remove that dirt from the eye
By poking it with a toothpick
I want to make sure those are spikes to the die
And not just dirt

I don't see doubling on liberty, as for the eye I will attach a better pick and I did attempt to remove any dirt.
Thanks
Thanks

Jed
If you go to the vams by date page
Hit 1878 s
Then hit
1878 s b2 varieties
It should take you to another page
Were the 78 s are classified by broken r
And unbroken r ,star etc
Your coin should be in the vam 5 to vam 113 range
Hope that helps
It narrowed it down to only 43 vams
Hope that helps

Shared Obverse with V46. Worm eye !!
Re: 1878-S lots going on
The engraving under the eagle's right (viewer's left) wing is a main pick-up point for most 1878-S VAMs. This area was retouched by hand on many dies, and therefore has a unique appearance on each retouched die.

VAM 46 and 52 share the Worm Eye. Not the 46 reverse though.
