1923-S VAM-1AD5

Post by Pareidoliac » Fri Mar 08, 2019 12:51 am

Pretty sure this is 1AD5 as I located the die scratches above 2 (from neck to below designer's initial) and under Y. However, I also see what appears to be a die gouge in the last two right rays of Liberty.

The 1AD5 page has a single photo showing the die scratch at 2 but not the die scratch under Y or full coin photos. Does anyone have a 1AD5 who can confirm there is a die gouge in the right rays under and to the left of R? Discovery coin

Thanks, Vamsterdam. that's interesting. I would not have thought there could be clashes there, though I am only just beginning to explore Peace VAMs. I wondered about the marks between the rays and thought they had a clashed quality, but the raised marks right of last ray in field look like a gouge.

The raised area would be the gap between the leaves on the branch, only in negative. It would be lower relief on the reverse but when clashed to the obverse it becomes raised.

The obverse has the die gouges left of DI and below Y as you have shown, with clash marks as you have shown. If there are no clash marks on the reverse then you have only the 2nd (known to me) specimen of VAM 1AD5. Nice pickup!!!!!

Thanks, David. I do not see any obvious clash marks on the reverse, though as this thread attests I didn't know the marks under the E in LIBERTY were clash marks. I'm assuming they would be in the lower right reverse. Where exactly would it be? Attached are reverse photos for your review.

You have a VAM 1AD5, nice pickup! The earlier die stated (VAMs 1AD 1-4) will have triple spikes on eagle's shoulder.
