Edited post 1899-O VAM 11 or 11A

Post by UNCLE BINGO » Mon Jun 05, 2023 12:03 am

So this is one of the first dollars I attempted to attribute last year .The stuff I put numbers on in the beginning were a little hit and miss    Just wanted to ask if this in fact qualifies as a later die state 11A or just a common VAM 11: IT has a scratch by the MM and one on the obverse , TIA

Nice one! @UNCLE BINGO It looks like 11-a to me but I'm not sure about later die state or how large the cracks are when they get a promotion and become a break! I can't really see the crack beside the MM well enough but being in middle of the field I think your correct in probably a scratch. But I'm a newb so...lol

Ya I agree with everything you said  I think it's an 11 A as well . And the other thing is probably a scratch. I did not even notice it until I took those pictures. In looking through the VW pages I got the impression that some of this use to have a different number that had been changed and desiginattion of the LDS state has to do with metal being thick at the break at TED . I am pretty new too man ,and I keep screwing up any kind of planchet flaw so figured I Would ask

I am on vacation so sorry I can't properly reply. I'm unsure how much I've commented on this before apart from the fact that many of my own coins are VAM-11 varieties and not true 11A ones because the breaks must be significantly advanced like the pictures on the page. There are tons of 11s with cracking (most of the ones I've seen) but very few hit the 'tipping point' to be truly called an 11A. For as impressive as the cracks on this coin is, I'd suspect it'd still be an 11 (sorry for any bad news). I do know some of the coins have strike doubling on IGWT, too... but unlistable (obviously).

Thank you Sir ! Its fine I'm not gonna loose any sleep over it . i Just thought the definition between crack and break applied. All the hub bub about the metal at TED on the discovery coin looked like it just took a small hit in just the right place to me anyway . :D
