can't find right vam

Post by philbo33 » Sat May 27, 2023 10:02 pm

Just won this coin at auction, so not in hand yet. Can't find vam that matches the coin, any help would be appreciated. A lot going on with date and mintmark. Seller had decent photos. This is my first post on this board, thanks philbo33

One thing I’ve noticed here, which I’m thankful for now😂, they will nudge you in the direction but they probably won’t just give it to you.

The reverse looks off or maybe the photo is warped. Eagle appears offcenter and right wreath looks larger than left. Counterfeit comes to mind.

Otherwise, the date looks nearer than any near date tagged listings I opened. The "O" looks upright and left; also not listed. It's very difficult to match without closeups of the date, mint mark, identifying 1 or 2 berry, etc. There's also privately made ones. Perhaps its one of those. GL

1902-O is a good date for divide and conquer. There are reverses that are C4, C3, and C4/C3. Then look at the date and mint mark position. This doesn't look like one of the privately made ones.

One thing that might trip you up is the 2. From your photo, it looks like the lower half is filled. If this is the case, be aware that the die chip that causes this happens later in the die's life, and that there are probably coins from the same dies without the filled 2.

Hard to tell from your photos, but I may have an idea for your coin.
Is that a crack from the back of the head to the M in UNUM?
Also, is there any crack through the date?
Can you take close up photos?

Looks like a filled 2 in the date. Try this to see if it helps.

It used to be on this site that posting pics of coins before you have it in hand was discouraged. While not all folks agree with that, I do. I am out on this coin.

I agree that it’s best to post after you receive the coin.
However; I think you are pretty new to VW.
It may be appropriate to give you a pass.
Now more people know.
Have fun with VAMs and keep on posting your coins.
Welcome to VW.

So, here's the reasoning behind not posting until you have the coin: A lot of online sellers lurk on VAMworld and, if you find something good they didn't notice, they CAN actually cancel or recall the shipment...
It's not really an ethical issue on your end, but more of a CYA issue.

Here are the photos of the coin in hand, the date and mint mark look different than seller' photos but it is the same coin.
