1899-O
Hi all! This wasn’t listed on Top 100. Any thoughts on the “X”?

X marks the spot (where the treasure is supposed to be, but ruined the coin instead...)?

Re: 1899-O
But the mark is a protrusion on the surface of the coin, not a cut into the coin.

Yes
This is a question that comes up on a semi regular basis.
Let’s say it was a knife cut that made the X.
As the blade pushes into the coin, metal is displaced upward. As the coin continues to be worn with use, the raised metal smooths out and hides the groove that was cut into the coin. Your coin is a good example of this situation.
