Have you ever been "VAMboozled" ?

Have you ever been convinced by a seller that a coin is one VAM, then later learn it is a more common variety?

I remember the early days of collecting Morgans. I learned quick that there are 3 ways to learn. Paying, pain and knowledge. I still get suckered for a V16 every once in a while, because of bad pictures. Its much worse when a 3rd party grading company gets it wrong.

Has happened twice to me in past year or so. In trying to upgrade my 91o set, the seller didn't get me, the grading company did.... looked in photos like it was what it was listed as, but closer inspection proved to be another VAM.

Paying, pain and knowledge.
There is a very good reason I can spot a casting from 48 inches...

Sure
I have also had lots of hatred dumped on me when I have tried to nicely explain to a seller on eBay that their VAM attribution was incorrect.

Don't feel like the "Lone Stranger" in that regard Lee.
Some of these sellers get pissed and have told me to "mind my own business",
As they say, "no good deed goes un-punished". :)

VAMBOOZLED <<< NO , But I have been Photo shopped,,,,, Coin was as advertised correctly but clearly not the die state I was hoping for....Maybe I should not say Photo shopped but more selective Photography will be my excuse     '

On a separate oration, I did tell a seller on Ebay why he did not have a 1884-S, 11 A in his pictures . think he changed it to VAM 3 after.... but it just had a closer date placement , still not absolutely sure he got it right after the texts ...one of his text said "Well it has a filled S"

Yes, I've been Vamboozled a number of times, sometimes by myself, from blurry seller pictures and visual artifacts.

Early in my VAM learning i would buy from some more knowledgeable VAMmers. A couple rather than give me a price would ask what I would be willing to pay. Looking back i realize I paid too much for few. I haven’t given it too much energy, at the time i was happy to acquire what i did.

To flip it around i was picking in a shop that had recently been purchased and found/ purchased several VAMs. I also saw a micro s 1903 and felt bad so asked the owner if he knew what he had. He did not. Looking back i wonder why i did not ask to purchase it, or if i should have just picked it and gone on. Ive never seen one in the wild again.

Yes, a couple of times, but they were self-inflicted. Back in the early days of 'picking in Heritage auctions, I thought I was was right about my attributions. But they turned out to be mirages caused by lighting. That's when I really took my tag line seen below to heart.
When in doubt... don't.
