1888 VAM 7 or 7A

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sun Apr 16, 2023 5:40 pm

I've been spending a bit of time going through the VAM 7 family coins I have and a couple of them have given me questions. This post is the 1st and it's regarding the dividing line between 7 and 7A.

The coin in question is an NGC MS 64 (3689512-020). It has the gouges at the arrow heads but only the lowest line above the left wing remains prominent and it doesn't have the lines below the right wing or between the body and left wing.

I always took the multiple lines above the wing as iconic for VAM 7 and I've been hesitant on this one to call it that. But if the die is the die, I may have to get over it. Of all 5 states, VAM 7 and VAM 7D have been the easiest to figure out. It's A, B, and C that are a bit cloudy.

Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Can't wait to hear the input of others. As mentioned elsewhere, I have a handful of '1888-P VAM-7x' coins in my set - designated with an 'x' because I can't figure them out! All of them matching and not the listed attributes, wreaking havoc with my cerebral matter to the point I gave up. Please let me know if you'll be sending any to JB or JR as I'll contribute mine!

I too am looking forward to anyone's insight.

I have 19 coins in the VAM 7 family that I'll be sending to JB in early May. (I'm hoping to get ahold of another 7D that doesn't have the mark at the right shoulder mentioned in my other VAM 7 post, but no luck so far.) Right now they're helping me to understand when the different states start. Once that's done, I'll send them. There are several raw in AU to MS condition that I'll send to JR to get encapsulated after I get them back.

We'll see what happens.
