Need some help with an 86 P
Thought it would be pretty easy to figure out which VAM this one is with the obvious PUP's it has. Long polish lines in the hair and longer and fatter ones in the tailfeathers. But after a couple trips through the list I'm drawing a blank.
So, I'm turning it over to the pros who've seen a whole lot more of these than I.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Jonnie

The top of the 6 might be doubled. And maybe the inside of the ear.Vam-mysterio wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 5:57 pmClose up pictures of the 1-86

Thought I'd give this a bump to see if anything shakes loose.

Im not really in a position to make a claim looking at a cell phone screen .How does the big gouge in the scribble area compare to VAM 1H LFCP. What about the eagles right wing ?

Im not sure . It seems to me you could at least match the reverse based on that gouge or scratch 'its pretty thick

Thanks for looking, Uncle Bingo.UNCLE BINGO wrote: ↑Mon Apr 03, 2023 7:33 pmIm not really in a position to make a claim looking at a cell phone screen .How does the big gouge in the scribble area compare to VAM 1H LFCP. What about the eagles right wing ?
This one has a mark in the area of the scratch shown on the 1H but it doesn't look to be in the same place, orientation, and it's too short. I wrote it off as PMD.
The scribble and tailfeather area on the LFCP for the 1H looks rather clean.
I also thought the reverse would be easy to match, but, here we are. The only thing I've been able to match is a scratch in the R in Liberty shown in the Additional Photos on VAM 1K.
I'll probably keep looking at it for a little while but it's most likely headed for the pile that'll send it from a cluttered desk to a messy one.
Again, Thanks,
Jonnie
Re: Need some help with an 86 P
Stuff near the eagle's legs - not seen by me before, but take that for what it's worth (admittedly: not much).
Not seeing much else that would make this anything but a VAM-1 or a VAM-6 (remembering that the 6 does tend to sit a bit high 'naturally' - i.e., on a VAM-1).
Sorry can't be more help!

Re: Need some help with an 86 P - UPDATE
This one made the trip to JB and him and JR decided that until they can see a high grade specimen, in order to see whether there is any minor doubling, it would be listed as a VAM 1.
After looking at a few 1000 86 P's, I have been able to acquire (2) more. Both raw and none of them better than AU 50 (at best).
On the bright side, one of them is clashed with a "t" visible. Under the right conditions, I can make out the tip of "n" but, since the coin has a lot of circulation marks in the area, I'm leaving that as a maybe. There is also a crack now going through the hair vee,
Still going to keep looking but I'm starting to get worried that they all are heavily circulated.

Another plus is I can now compare the three to see what they might share:
Obverse
-Possible doubling (minor) = "1" lower right side & "8 8 6" left side (visible on coins 1 & 3) and profile at nose (visible on all)
-Chip at top of P in PLURIBUS
-Portion of cap polished away just above cap band. Multiple polish lines
-Horizontal polish lines in front of eye. Frequent lines at hair edge on face and in the hair
-Small chips in ear
Reverse
-Multiple gouges in upper tailfeathers, (1) long, curved, and diagonal. Another shorter, curved, and horizontal above right talon.
-Fine polish lines in wing/neck gap and at wreath bow

VAM 1 BIg Gouge
Ruffled feather duster
Getting your tail feathers in a knot
Somewhere you would think a 64 exists in plastic , but I sure don't think i have seen one .Maybe keep an eye out .

The majority of what I've dug through has been beautiful coins and if the scratches are still that prominent after circulating, I'd love to see it mint.
So I keep looking.

I have sent the 1st one I found. Both Johns have discussed it and they want to see a much less circulated version thinking there may be doubling hiding.
