O/T Pushing a cell phone camera to its limits/

Post by UNCLE BINGO » Sun Apr 02, 2023 1:08 am

So this is about the best LFCP I have taken , 1881-CC, think I wrote V6 on it along time ago, so hoping that part is right .
I can see what I am doing wrong with the lighting,,, but not real sure how to fix it best . I am way into suggestions by those who know how to make them better... .Anyone????

That looks dang good to me. Better than I can manage with a cell phone.

How far are you from the coin when you take the picture? That will determine what you can do with the lighting.

Maybe 4 to 5 inches that was the only way to get the high res to focus . Had to use the timer . But i am thinking something that reflects the lighting would be better. I had no idea I was gonna struggle with coin photos like I have . Glare is not your friend. Lol

Its like unlearning everything you knew about photography for me , and we are coming up on the one year anniversary into my own feebler attempt at Morgan dollar Vams , so I really need some help with this macro stuff.. I thought I knew how to take pretty pictures , its just very different with coins ....

From your link "All models are wrong, but some models are useful" I like that :!:

The new phone works much better than that poor wore out destroyed one . The only digital imitation i know of for quality glass is something with a big number in front of MP. the one lenses claims 50 MP ,,, heck I remember when 8MP was the cats meow

K so I built this wonderful piece of engineering tech out of a box , 8 pieces of white paper , and a little scotch tape . Cut hole in top for adjustable Ring light to shine through custom white paper filter .
There might actually be hope here .

Short answer is that you're too close. The sensor in your phone probably has far more pixels than you need, so back up to about a foot away. If you have a telephoto lens on your phone, and not just digital zoom, use that. Don't center the coin in the image, but center the lens above it instead. This will give you more room for better lighting. A light box is almost never useful for coin photos. If you want to watch a video about shooting coin photos on the cheap with a cheap point and shoot camera, watch this presentation I did at FUN in 2011. The technology is a little old, but the techniques are still valid.
