Acid before, Acid after ?? 1878-S short nock
So my buddies family owns a coin store and he asks me today about a coin stuck in "research later" bin. I look at it, and tell him it looks like acid put on parts of the eagle , PMD , through the loupe . long story short he tells me to take it and take pictures and find out here on VW .. I have no idea , because this thing is brutal , but I might add coin is still pretty lustrous in hand. I mean its got to be PMD from some mad scientist otherwise this reverse die would have shortly melted after if this thing came out like this ?????? I figured this would be educational if nothing else . Any comments are appreciated and welcome . Thanks

I'm seeing more road rash than acid. I have multiple ones that look like that - nothing to me but good old abuse with some other object that won (or perhaps not, but at least made its mark).

Thanks Doc .it looked like PMD to me but I was not sure. The side of the breast looks like someone shot a turkey with a shotgun

How was this determined to be the result of "acid treatment" of a die?

No I had thought based on the year someone had attempted to mimic one of the acid treated dies , Everything I looked at under the scope appears to be post mint damage .. The coin appears to have chunks of metal missing either by accident or a vain attempt to deceive... It could be just circumstance I don't know . I took it back to my buddy today and told him it appears to just be post mint damage ...
