Is this an RPM?

Post by MarkyB » Wed Mar 22, 2023 10:20 pm

Got this beauty in today. Can't nail it down. I'm terrible with doubling but MM can't be doubled right? Any help or guesses at the coin appreciated. More photo's available upon request. She'll be out for a few days. I will also share its a 188X and far date.

As far as I know some mm can have doubling but yours doesn't appear to have any as far as I can see but I could be incorrect. Though It does appear to have some die fatigue/die deterioration to the left of the mm, and Is it a 1885-S ?.
I plan to collect VAMs and maybe discover new ones, but until then I'm just here. Don't forget this is a live and learn hobby have fun with it.

Doubling - but likely machine doubling. Look at the 'shelves' on the D and the O below... and will likely find other features on the reverse. Where the coin slid away from the die right after being stuck.

Pretty, sometimes; frustrating, often.
