Did I do good?

Post by keilg1 » Sat Mar 11, 2023 11:46 am

I thought she pretty...

My question about the reliability of SEGS grading (http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic ... 793#p61793 seemed to indicate mixed results. I'll not disclose what they slabbed it as b/c I'd like to hear your thoughts?

I would say the grade is a MS62 PL due to the fact its 1878cc VAM 18 ( My Guess).
And Thats High on the TPG grading scale for a VAM18 . Just a guess . But still
a Nice looking coin . Doesnt look like any Problems with the coin .

I would say you did alright , but I also try to not spend a whole bunch of money based off TPG numbers alone .

hope you got a good deal , it is pretty!

Clean face and clean bird. I would give it a minimum of MS64. Probably PL and maybe DMPL, depending on the photograph. But I'm still learning.

Lots Prettier than mine Doc .I would guess pcgs 63 pl . Hope I'm not to far off ... I think we are always learning , I just have more to learn than most . I'm gun shy about what SEGS called it , but hope you love it no matter what anyone else thinks :D

And pcgs price guide says you did really good if Im close

I saw the hairlines too but they looked minimal, hope you don't have to make a pocket piece out of it before grading cause it is way pretty .

Thanks all.

I did not pay the price of what the label said: 65PL. Defo not 65 based on the chatter mostly on the reverse - the PL surface is fairly accurate, I believe, so most of what is seen is very superficial but by sheer number I thought 65 was way too liberal a grade. The small striations seemed to be natural and not past wipes with a cloth or something more abrasive so to hear others think it might be detail-free is encouraging.

My best (but often inaccurate) guess was a 63PL which would still make me happy. I'm happy to register it in SSDC as it is stated on the label but, and again, don't feel it a proper representation of the coin and, thus, the census because this would be the top pop for this Top 100 variant -- a designation I'd be thrilled but would feel conflicted with.

Final question on this: What would YOU do? Break it out and send it to ... who? PCGS? NGC? ANACS? (No other options on that account, IMHO.) Or keep it in the hoder thus maintaining the ambiguity?

Well thats a tuff descison to make , To break out or not .
If you send it to PCGS for a crossover in the slab and mark the Min grade MS63 PL
and If it doesnt make it they wont break it out . Just a thought ! So you would protect
your holder if they deem its a lower grade then 63 . I just see on PCGS the TOP OF POP for a VAM 18 is 64PL and 5 in 62PL .
So hence my thought of 62PL would be the grade from stats . But still if a 63PL its a real winner . So I think a 62PL for sure
the 63PL might be a push , but I dont have the coin in hand and Im just going on the ODDS . LOL .

Well keep us posted on what you do and what the outcome is if you send it to PCGS . Very Nice COIN !!!

I would send it to PCGS as I stated above , but we dont know what your cost was in buying the coin , So we cant
calculate the risk . A VAM18 in 62 PL list at 2.2K at PCGS . So at least that might be a guidline for you . A 63 PL
would be 2nd highest and a 64PL would be tied for Top Of Pops . So factor this info in your thoughts .
Best Of Luck on whatever you descide .

Yes I may in fact die of old age before we find out what the new CAC will become , will it be an option ? Will they attribute VAMS,???? Best thing they could do in that arena would be to poach JB and JR , make them an offer they can't refuse ,
{fantasy land going on over here but that would be something off the hook for the hobby }
I'm just wore out trying to figure out number 1 and 2 musical grading standards , but that is just my opinion. they do get it right most of the time .

Yeah yeah , I know buy the coin not the plastic .
I just want better plastic i guess
