Reputability of SEGS & PCI?

Post by keilg1 » Thu Mar 02, 2023 7:44 am

Promoted by the post http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7401 I got to thinking...

SSDC registry allows for SEGS and PCI certified and gradesd coins to be entered. In my experience, SEGS is often way off base - don't have much experience with PCI.

I'm wondering what your wider experience is? I know... buy the coin and not the holder but if the holder says it is much higher than it likely is, shouldn't we NOT enter it into the registry database because this gives a false impression of what is actually out there?

SEGS and PCI are both reputable in my view. They just aren't that popular. But they also will certify VAMs that are privately made and are components of list sets, as well as other VAMs other TPG's won't attribute. So they serve a purpose for VAM collectors who use the registry.

Thanks, @Bigbub! Happy to hear positive experiences. I own quite a few SEGS holdered coins and they are nice, for sure; I'm not a professional grader so can't say with any objectivity much about their accuracy but if others are experiencing good things (and PCGS and NGC keep showing themselves to be prone to WILDLY incorrect/controversial grades) they're no worse than the rest?!

Same rule still applies, look at the coin and not the holder.

Keep in mind that there have been close to 10 different reincarnations of PCI, some good, some not. This makes it hard to say what their reputability is.

Those with the Century Gothic font very often upgrade. They also are famous for very vivid bullseye toning on Morgans and ASEs.

The reputation of both is very poor with PCI outta business to my knowledge and Segs
owner very involved/smart but overgraded and will put a details coins in regular holders from
timeto time. PCI was terrible in the day, but got much better towards the end, simply due to
competition and collectors demanding more conservative

Today i stay away from both as your goingto be dis appointed overall, and lose your ass IMHO

I would put this another way!!!! WHAT REPUTATION---- ITS MOSTLY BAD

I've only bought them if it was a cherry pick. All have crossed that ive sent in and most at same grade for segs. Have a few trouble coins in pci holders but I knew it going into it. Ad most have said, buy the coin. Jim

I confirm with, buy the coin not the slab or the grade.
When I first started collecting silver dollars, I saw this nice looking 1880
in an AAG slab and bought it.
Many fellow coin collectors made fun of it, because of the AAG slab.
I was never able to see any vams, but I just liked the way the coin looked
and have been happy, with it ever since.

Nice looking one to me! I've seen third- or fourth-tier holdered coins that turned out to be wonderful finds. Agreeing with the buy the coin approach (as does seeing horrendously misgraded PCGS or NGC samples).

Lovely lady, Bert!
