Attribution 101 page question

Post by ljs123 » Fri Feb 24, 2023 1:26 pm

@messydesk
@vampicker

Recently there was a post asking if the coin in question was a very far date.
http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7389

I was going to answer that it was just a far date. So, I went to the Attribution 101 page to copy the example of a far date and a very far date so that I could add those examples to the thread.

The image from the Big Book was easy to understand and is how I think of date location.

However, when I scrolled down the page I saw a coin photo that was supposed to be an example of a Very Far Date.
Should the photo example of a Very Far Date be changed? It looks like a plain far date to me.
Thank you,
Confused

Yes, that's not a good picture for a very far date. I would just call that a far, low date. I know there are some VAMs that have been listed for questionable date positions, and perhaps this was one of them.

Stuff like this is the exact reason I prefer the DPIS. For this example, I'd call it LE4RH5.

This is new to me. Could anyone suggest a way for me to learn more about this? (for a simple person) :)

Thanks for a great site!

It's described on the Attribution 101 pages right after the verbal date position definition section

i Like the DPIS , although it is not really something my brain carries around with it quite yet , it is better and more scientific in my own feeble mind than the subjectivity involved in MM placement . Thanks from one of the new guys !

@UNCLE BINGO No problem at all. Vamworld is here to help with stress also. ;)

I have not determined the DPIS of the above pictured '1'. On the perpetual learning curve... Thanks for any comments.

You need the point of the neck in frame. Need to see the starting point to be able to count

:oops: I noticed my mistake. I will fix. Thanks JR

I was trying to find a sample coin with the LEB1 and the REB1 were between the denticles. This one has to be close...

But seriously, without the point of the neck showing I have to guess at the count but I'm betting on RE3B45

We don't need anymore poking , or beating , Maybe just a combined effort for the good of the hobby I think . Together this group could change at least a very small corner of this great big world .

Being a pre-1884 dollar, the date position is fixed in the hub, so DPIS is not relevant.
