The Collar Clash was a Transition from years ago when vamming had slowed from die breaks on Peace Dollars. Coins back in the day were found by vammers more easlier then today. The vammers of old will tell you the same. However, for the the new and up and coming keep the hunt up.

If the reeding is otherwise normal (coin struck fully in collar) and there's additional reeding on the rim, it would be a collar clash, where the hammer die hit the collar die before striking this coin.
It should be noted that initially, the collar clash is caused by vertical/horizontal misalignment of the hammer die.

that is precisely how i have it pictured in my mind, especially since during certain decades, the mints seem to have one heck of a time keep up production numbers WHILE keeping that pesky collar in place all the time. sure makes for a lot of neat errors and in decent quantity, especially from the 60s forward.

i wasn't going to say it but since the latest post say that:

i've seen a lot of coins with the collar clash divots to varying degrees, also have and/or m.a.d. and/or titled/partial collar errors with partial reeding, minimal reeding, only just reeding impressions (i found a really neat quarter with just barely reeding marks, about 5% away from being broadstruck), railroad rims etc, so there seems to be a family of errors connected to each other. i've seen other little clusters like this with errors, where one either directly or indirectly causes and/or is on the same coin(s). it is kinda neat once you get a group together and compare them.
