OT Grading Sets

I've always loved Peace Dollars and have collected them in most every way I could think of. I had the idea of collecting a PCGS grading set of 1922 peace dollars grouped by widely identifiable die strikes. I threw the "widely identifiable die strike" part out the window when the grades fell below 45 or above 64 because of cost mostly. I won't say how much I spent on this set (it wasn't on the coins) but I will say I'm responsible for the entire population of F12 and many surrounding grades with PCGS.

Maybe I'll send the entire two box set over to @messydesk for b1/b2 jk.

I have to say I got more excited about the last VF20 than most are with a gem grading result.

Quite a few years ago I finally finished a grading set of 1895-S in PCGS holders – every grade from Poor-01 to AU58. I still have the set. It was the best grading education I've ever had.

Awesome, I have a 8TF grading showcase set at PCGS, all different VAMs P01 to MS66 but have been slacking on getting them all sent in for Trueview pictures. This might be the motivation I needed.

Good to hear I'm not the only one into grading sets. TrueViews aren't the perfect representation but they're a he!! of a lot better than I can do. And they're idiot proof to use on the PCGS site. Perfect for me

There was a bonus to doing my grading set: I co-discovered the first new 1895-S VAM in many years -- VAM 1A (recently changed to VAM 6A). Then-PCGS president David Hall even put "VAM 1A Discovery Coin" on the holder.

These make neat projects, but they are often futile because the TPG "grades" and not stable. By the time you finish a set in one type of holder, they've changed and your set is no longer a useful tool.

This is true. I've experienced it with the older ANACS "soap bar" holders over the last few years. But a grading set will still represent most of the coins that have traversed the gauntlet of circulation. The coins won't change even if we apply comic book and baseball trading card grading scales.
