1921-D VAM-1J LDS Values
Good evening! I am looking for help on assigning a reasonable value for a 1921-D VAM-1J LDS in NGC MS65. I see an MS63 on eBay for sale and presumably no interest at $1000. Would an MS65 be worth much more? Is this coin really as rare as stated and just suffering lack of recognition and price discovery due to not being listed in one of the major lists/guides, or really not rare? Thank you for any insight!
Re: 1921-D VAM-1J LDS Values
Not being on a popular collecting "list" seriously raises the "who cares?" question for VAM 1J. And the huge run-up in higher Mint State 1921-D prices since covid (MS64s used to be $100, now they're often over $400) makes premiums a guessing game for just about any 1921-D VAM. Plus, from what I have seen the past two years, there are darn few collectors of 1921-D VAMs in any grade, let alone MS65s where the generic value for the date is what, $650? And even further complicating things is the question of how late a die state is the coin?

Under "additional photos", the first picture shows what is technically required to be a Late Die State. But photo #3 is probably what it takes for a significant premium. With that in mind, here's what I have in my sales database. I don't know how LDS that $538 MS63 coin was, but I'm going to guess it was the most desirable very LDS version:
1921-D 1J 64 PCGS Jan-23 E $408
1921-D 1J 64 NGC Dec-21 E $350
1921-D 1J 64 ANACS May-22 E $216
1921-D 1J LDS 63 NGC Oct-21 E $538
1921-D 1J 63 PCGS Dec-21 E $116
1921-D 1J 63 ANACS Apr-20 E $39
1921-D 1J 55 ANACS Feb-20 GC $75
1921-D 1J 55 ANACS Nov-21 E $50
1921-D 1J 53 ANACS Jul-21 E $90

Thank you very much for the response! This coin has a prominent retained cud above ED on the reverse (based on seller photos). I should have the coin in hand today and can post some better photos.DHalladay wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 1:12 amNot being on a popular collecting "list" seriously raises the "who cares?" question for VAM 1J. Re: 1921-D VAM-1J LDS Values
I'm not sure about whether this is a just 'regular' VAM 1J LDS, or if it's the very LDS VAM 1J that is most desirable. I'd love to know what @messydesk and @vampicker have to say.
Nice photos, BTW! We can always use more of those around here.
