1921D 1CL or 1CL2 with die file lines

Post by Jodemyer » Sun Jan 22, 2023 8:32 pm

Looking at this 1921D and trying to attribute correctly so I can file it. Would these be considered die file lines? They are in a different place than the 1CL2 plate coin also what caused the "Coral" look to the bust? Any help , thanks in advance. Also there are a few extra die cracks on this ones obverse and reverse but pretty sure it is one or the other. Thanks again!

A few more pics. The feeder finger gouges look mostly polished away to me.

Feed finger gouges 'wandered' a bit during the course of their lives; photos on the attribution pages aren't a must match exactly proposition.
When in doubt... don't.

@DHalladay I was wondering since it appears the feeder finger gouges have been polished out, if these were the die file lines which would attribute this as a 1CL2 even though in a slightly different place. I'm new but I think they are die file lines, Thanks for checking it out!

Your die cracks + feed finger lines tells me it's 1CL2.
Pretty coin.

"Die File Lines" is a weird term. Sometimes they refer to aggressive die polishing, typically to remove clashes. Other times, they refer to these patches of parallel lines that are created gradually by the die being scraped by the feed fingers, such as on this coin. Whether this coin is VAM 1CL or 1CL2, since it matches the spec of VAM 1CL2, that's what it is. Of course, all VAM 1CL might look like this. Some might have lines that are more or less developed. I'd call those VAM 1CL2, also.

If there were no VAM 1CL2 and I saw the subject coin today, I would not assign a new VAM number, rather add a comment to VAM 1CL that these lines develop over time with die usage. Doing so would prevent the confusion that led to this thread.
