Complete 1885-O set for sale - on GC ending 1/29

Hi gang,

There are two complete 1885-O sets in the SSDC Registry; fogie has one, and I have the other. Would you like to have the third complete 1885-O set? I am offering up for sale a certified, attributed set of all 31 known 1885-O die varieties.

It’s sort of odd that there isn’t more to the 1885-O set. The annual report of the Director of the Mint states that there were 124 die pairs used at the New Orleans mint in 1885, but only 28 die pairings have been identified. Maybe the rest were destroyed in the Pittman melt or at other times, but that just seems like a high percentage lost. My die study work has been mostly ablative, in that I helped to kill VAMs 8 and 11A, as well as showed that the VAM 13A discovery is really part of the VAM 18 family. Of the 28 die varieties, I’ve only found six that clashed, and of those six only one has letter transfer. Only one other die pairing has a late die stage worth noting. Maybe more LDS examples will surface, or some hoard with a new variety will come to light, but as of right now there are only 31 slots in the SSDC set for this year and mintmark.

Offering the following complete 1885-O set - all certified, all mint state, all attributed correctly. Asking $3500 for all 31 coins, delivered.

This complete set didn't get a lot of interest a couple years ago, so now it's up on Great Collections as individual lots with low starting bids, ending 1/29. It's a fun short set to complete, still only 31 slots!
