Exceedingly hard to find coin, thought somebody would congratulate me over this. I also managed to obtain an extremely worn, and badly scratched details grade 1878-S VAM 106 this year, shares the same reverse, also difficult to obtain in any condition.

Nice find! I have been looking for one of those for quite awhile now with no luck so far. I check pretty much all of the low ball ones too. Must've been exciting!

Heritage Auctions sells a details graded Vam 77 about once every 4 years, have to be patient. They sell cheap.

Congratulations on your find.

77 is a very curious VAM to me. It's undeniably a rare: I have just 10 total sales of problem-free examples in all grades in my database... that's it. But what's really strange is the highest grade out of those 10 coins is just VF25:

1878-S 77 25 PCGS Aug-18 H $480
1878-S 77 25 PCGS Oct-15 E $385
1878-S 77 20 PCGS May-20 PP $600
1878-S 77 20 PCGS Jul-18 H $432
1878-S 77 12 NGC Aug-21 E $310
1878-S 77 12 NGC Sep-17 H $180
1878-S 77 10 PCGS Dec-19 PP $500
1878-S 77 10 PCGS May-14 E $407
1878-S 77 8 PCGS Feb-22 E $125
1878-S 77 8 NGC Oct-19 DL $103
When in doubt... don't.

Hard to believe that one with such a low population has such a low interest. I sold a pcgs25 last year of year before and several others.

I guess there are close to thirty of these coins rolling around in graded cases, they are not super rare. I have two with clear grades and now this third example with problems.
