1921-D VAM 5C question

Post by DHalladay » Tue Nov 22, 2022 6:38 pm

The official name, listing and description for VAM 5C says:

1921-D VAM-5C Tripled Date & Stars, Die Break Inside S #2

Discovered by Rob Joyce, March 2005. Revised description Sept 2007.
5C(revised) IV 4 D2a (Tripled Date & Stars, Die Break Inside S # 2) (189) I-2 R-6
Reverse D2a - Die crack thru top of TES up to rim above A with small bean shaped die break at bottom inside of lower loop of second S. Break more centered than VAMs 5A(1Y) & 5B. Fine die scratches in various directions on over polished tail feathers around eagle's right leg and between eagle's left wing and body.
Die marker - Long vertical die scratch at inner feathers of eagle's left wing.

Comments:
1. This is a "Bean Bottom S" variety.

So if this is a textbook VAM 5C (it's in an attributed ANACS holder):

... then what does that make this? (self-attributed as 5C EDS; has all the major PUPs listed for 5C, but not all of the cracks – and none of the Bean Bottom S):
1921-D VAM 5C EDS.jpg

Does that make it a 5B?
Does that make it a sub-variety of 5C?
Or is it just a 5C curiosity?
When in doubt... don't.

I'd call it VAM 5C EDS, since it's its own die pair. The description on my label would include something like, "early die stage before break in S forms." I could possibly be convinced to split it into 5C1 (Scribbles only) and 5C2 (Scribbles + break) since they're easily distinguishable and you would send me both coins for examination.

Excellent! :D
I'll do that when things settle down there.
