Impact of Rim Ding on grading

Post by Dirtdoctor » Fri Nov 18, 2022 12:25 pm

This is a nicer 1880 VAM 32a Clashed In, other than a nasty obverse rim ding at 7 o'clock. It's full of bag marks but has original detail, and otherwise appears at least AU. My question is how the apparent defect would impact grading? Would it get graded with some description of defect, not graded, or what?

If it crossed my desk, I'd call it 'rim damaged'

I agree. That ding is pretty severe.
When in doubt... don't.

Fair enough - thanks. I'm wondering if it would be returned as not gradable, or if it would get "xx Details - Rim damaged". Unsure how that works. Other than the rim damage, it looks nice in hand despite bagmarks, and I've been looking for one for a while the clearly has the "n". For an MS graded coin that shows the "n" and details, they are pretty expensive. This one set me back $40 - have a budget to stay within.

Both the rim ding and the environmental damage from the fingerprint would prevent a straight grade.

Because she has that large ding and will be a details coin anyway i would
give her a decent bath to remove all that black on reverse as it cant but help.
I would send to Anacs not PCGS/NGC as Anacs will give a numerical net grade
and that helps to determine final value, which Details coins average about 50% of
retail pric list values, depending severity of details issues

OR OR OR OR
Teach yourself or your kid how to sight in uour rifle using coiin for safety, as World

have blown the bastard out my front door.
