The original is on page #65 (out of 500) in fair copy journal 46 at the national archives in College Park, Md. (The small code at the top of the page identified the source document.)
I scanned this volume last Thursday.
If you go to the Newman Numismatic Portal (NNP.edu) you can access many US Mint and other American numismatic documents including old auction catalogs, specialty group newsletters, etc. -- all for free.

You come up with some amazing history Roger!
Can't wait until you uncover the "We had to let one of our inspectors go today after realizing they were not performing their duties" letter from New Orleans dated sometime in 1888!!

Spectacular Historical Information Roger!
Re: Cost of making silver dollar dies 1887
Correspondence indicates New Orleans was a persistent source of "drama" and internal conflict from its beginning to closing. It was the only US Mint where a serious proposal was made to use slave labor. (Immediately rejected.) Persistent jockeying for authority, and inefficiency matched only by the Carson Mint.

I'm attempting to post items of interest to Morgan and Peace dollar collectors. These are more about how and why, rather than varieties.
