Need Help with 1921, broken E Obv

Post by jrfaust » Thu Sep 29, 2022 3:32 pm

Hello all, Hey, I've got a 21 that I believe has a broken E on the obv. 1st, is it a "Broken" E?
If so, can someone point me to the correct VAM :?
On the Obv, coin has Tripe L&R stars and date, also Dbl'd E & P with a Dbl'd Profile from hair to Lips
Rev: Dbl'd STATES OF AMERICA, has no scribbles that I can see...
Here are a few pics, sorry about quality, my scope is acting up :(
Thanks in advance for any help on this :D

Interesting!!

I hesitate to say the coin isn't real. But it is very odd that metal flow lines appear to extend into the area where the missing part of the E is.

I'd like to hear what @messydesk and @vampicker have to say about this.
When in doubt... don't.

I'd guess it's a strike thru, but could be an unfortunately placed hit. Not buying this as an actual die thing

Why do you think it looks fake? Is it the color or something else? My digital scope is acting up  Ring test is positive, 2, 21's side by side sound exactly the same...coin weight and diameter all seem to be in tolerance.

I don't think it's in the die either. The flow lines are vexing, though. Another possibility is that there was a gas bubble here when struck which later deflated, collapsing the top of the E.

Grease or debris filled die error?

The color change around this further supports some sort of struck thru debris error. Can't explain the flow lining, but this might be natural on a filled die that's already well worn. Wouldn't mind seeing additional examples

Thanks John's and All!
I still would like help with identifying the VAM if possible. :)I've been up and down the VAM pages and can't come up with a match. :? (I'm sure I've overlooked something  )Here's what I see:
"On the Obv, coin has Tripe L&R stars and date, also Dbl'd E & PL with a Dbl'd Profile from hair to Lips
Rev: Dbl'd STATES OF AMERICA, has no scribbles that I can see..
Any thoughts?
Thanks again in advance :D

Could be the debris was impacted in the die long enough to develop flow lines of its own. It's much softer than die steel, so it'll develop lines faster, and maybe they'd tend to line up with existing lines in the die.
