1878s VAM-18A

Post by Flat-Chested » Mon Sep 26, 2022 4:58 pm

Found this on ebay last week, there was little interest in the Vam, the coin sold cheap. It is one of the easier 1878s Vams to identify, is a WOW! Vam and a Top 30 1878s Vam, is difficult to find for sale in any condition.

It appears to be 18A. Other high end VAM-18 coins are in ANACS holders apparently.

1878s Vam-18 and 18A seem to be rarer encapsulated and more rarely sold on the market than four of the San Francisco Long Nocks... 26, 27, 56 and 57.

VAM 18 is usually found in XF-AU, often with problems. Uncirculated ones are much tougher. The XF-AU count is probably underrepresented in the registry because it's not on as many want lists or in as many collections as the long nocks.

Great find!
In all my years of looking I've only encountered one, a cleaned XF/AU that I left for someone else to take home.
When in doubt... don't.

Yea, It took me 12 years to find one. It now resides in an ANACS AU 58 Holder.

They are out there in small numbers and once acquired, few collectors put them up for sale, it seems.
