1881 S questions

Post by 7495Shoveler » Sun Sep 18, 2022 11:39 pm

Greetings All,
First off I am a newbeevammer and I admire the time and effort Vammers put into their research!
I'm not sure if I will be able to put in enough time to become a Vammer (per my wife) but I do find it interesting.
I have a 1881 S MS 65 graded and slabbed by PCGS two years ago.
After to much research (per my wife) I have discovered it's a Vam 9-38-83-etc-etc....
I know clashes on 1881's are common without letter transfer but the obverse appears to have an excessive amount of clash on the viewers left. Since it's toned and slabbed the clash is hard to take pictures of. There also appears to be some weird obtuse anomalies? It also appears the "M" can be seen on the reverse.
I haven't checked die rotation yet (due to wife) but it appears more than normal.
I have attached some pics to see if I should do more research or quit vamming (which my wife thinks I should do  )
Thanks in advance.

1881 s is well known for doubling obv & rev with about 5 or so having raised metal in both 8's of date
Not known for heavy clashing marks Not known for many to carry value premium for vams
but vam 54B is super special with premium price value

Welcome to vamming, but most wives do not like it as it takes time away from other
family/wife honey do's etc Good luck with that LOL

Always start with the date and the mint mark. Of the pictures you posted, those are the two that are needed to attribute this coin. I don't see any clash marks of note. 81-S can be difficult to attribute due to frequent machine doubling, but this one isn't hard. Your initial assessment is on the right track, and since one of the numbers you had listed was correct, I'll tell you that I would call it VAM 38.

Always glad to see when your expert opinion matches my inexperienced one, @messydesk. I saw the picture of the date that seemed to match the 38 I have in hand.

Thanks for the FREE educational experience. :geek:

Thank you for the input Gentlemen.
I was just questioning myself on the etched leaves on the Vam-83. I can see things no one sees ;)
I have one more question on another coin, same date. I don't think I need to start another thread and I am sure someone will let me know if I'm wrong.
I believe it is another Vam 38 but the metal buildup on the device tops is what I question. It's on most of the obverse stars also.
Thanks again.

Try Vamming this one with what you can see inside the loops of both "8'".
You've captured what you need to solve this.
Or at least narrowed it down.

The metal build-up on the digits is classic ejection doubling that's very common for 81-S. It also makes it harder to attribute the coins at time. The obverse is correct for VAM 38, but notice that the mint mark is in a slightly different place.

MM location is slightly different for your pics as show below. The VAM-38 page states for Comment 1: This obverse shared with VAM-9, VAM-10, and VAM-38. Since we know the first submission was a VAM-38 only two choices are left for the second coin. Unfortunately VAM-9 has no MM pic. However, VAM-10 has a pic that shows strong doubling lines in the MM so not that one. Only one left.
