HIt List 40 Value Questions
Greetings ,
I would like to ask a question . Lets say I picked up a "common " yesterday from the bay . Nothing special just something that caught my eye and there was a empty hole in my DANSCO book to fill . Please forgive my inexperience in most things VAM related however Lets say the coin in question is a 1890- O ,,,,,AU 53 if My untrained eye had to guess . PCGS price guide has it for about 55 bucks . After some searching this fine site and its many resources i have preliminary guessed the coin is a VAM 20 falling under the HIT LIST 40 qualification . Although I have no intention of selling any Morgans in my books unless the opportunity for upgrade comes along , I just want to know what kind of added value, if any a Hit list 40 coin is, if any? I hope this question is not too novice in nature . I just don't have anything that says "Hey this VAM is worth x in that grade" . Thank you all in advance .
.///Bob

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
Interested in hearing the answer to this one, too.
SSDC database guide shows odd values. Most 90-Os in 50, 53 or 55 condition go for about $45 (to $55 or $60 but not that much higher), yet the SSDC site shows the value for the VAM-20 to run amok in higher circulated grades, only to precipitously drop off at high MS grades. I, personally, think this is a simple error and not reflective of the true value because higher MS graded coins are common but not that low.
Not a super high SSDC population especially in those higher circulated grades - with a single one (top pop) at an MS60, so these babies could be scarce and the grades/values listed above fairly close (but historical sales related which might not be the case today).
Again, looking forward to hearing from others much more experienced than I am!

I will contact the Price Guide administrator and advise him of the error.
When in doubt... don't.

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
You all are pretty good folks in my book . Thank you !
You made my day !!!!
Got my butt kicked today as my very first PCGS submission came back without the words MINT ERROR on it . Kinda feel a little stupid for not sending caliper measurements of the edges along with it. LMAO .Maybe l will bust it out of its gold shield plastic prison, with my 28 ounce framing hammer and film it for YouTube so I can show the whole world what I really think about third party grading opinions

Will you be using an Estwing?
A good tool but may not be the best choice for what you have in mind.

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
HI Geseas,
Now that you mention it i think its an old Vaughn with the hickory handle . i just got results back on my third PCGS submitting, and one of my commons came back genuine UNC cleaned with no grade so I might be using the hammer on that one as well .
I tried the more civilized approach once by using a pair of dykes on a holder , but it just does not have the same satisfaction as the trusty hammer . LOL

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
Hello Bob,
Vaughn has a long history of making quality hand tools.
I looked on youtube just to see what was the best recommendation for a coin extraction from Thee third-party holder. There were a lot of good, no damage to the coin, ideas.
Sounds like a lot of folks are dissatisfied with the TP sealed slip grading business; .just like yourself.
when you read on more, they want the option to handle the coins and see the edge. VSS and Anacs will figure something out.

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
Wood chisel and hammer . hit the seam on the side of holder , away from coin be safe .
Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
Thanks @colwillys I went searching for a chisel to do the 'deed' for my first time. I found this on the chisel. maybe a little OT, but my guess is this company had a lot in common with coin die-making. Has a hardened 'edge holding' layer of metal when you look at the chisel profile. The top layer is soft.

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
Unfortunately I tend to get off topic .LOL
I guess I need to see if the SSDC Data base values for the original coin in question has been amended to give a better idea of what a 1890-O VAM 20 in a AU 53 really is ? I will have to start a new topic and get someone else to explain just what makes some of these newly accrued Third party grading opinions bare the cleaned coin badge of shame .Now I have high res photos to share if I can figure out how to shrink the pictures down enough to share them on here . Because I really would like to have some idea of what I am doing wrong . This other "common " has better eye appeal than even my highest graded Morgan Dollar and I am truly left scratching my head and reaching for the trusty hammer .

By becomming a member of SSDC. From the main VAMWorld2.0 page: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... /wiki/SSDC
Well worth it, IMHO.
And continued best of luck!

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
OK so is there a way to join The SSDC online ? I tried to it online and the link for the application appears to not work anymore .
It is probably me . if not and we need to do it the old fashion way with a check and snail mail , I am good with that. I just would very much like to join if that is OK ?

Re: HIt List 40 Value Questions
UPDATE ... coin has proven not to be VAM 20 .... obverse looks correct still even under magnification ...subsequent grading guess reduced to AU 50 on a good day ,, {Hopefully not cleaned} MINT mark and any doubling on reverse is completely wrong .... Moderate hit to make believe assumed value of RAW coins in book =minus 1,000 bucks , and much shorter attribution list for any future grading with attributes to TPG company of choice .....
