I considered a coin hit but am unable to find another US coin with any kind of edge features that match. Plus the two "W"'s or "M"'s are different from each other.

The edge of the U close to it is perhaps flattened by the edge of a punch??

Curious to see what concensus says.

If you're wondering about the W shape, picture the reeding on many dollars. The deepest parts are obvious - it's from the reeds. The indentation in the centers is not typical, but many pieces have small raised ridges in the center of the spaces between reeds. It's like the EDS stage of the collar die. This coin took a hard enough shot to leave an impression from these ridges.
