1923-D: Saturday Night Fun

Post by MarkyB » Sun Mar 06, 2022 3:26 am

I picked up this little beauty today at the Lincoln NE coin show. The reverse is a VAM 2/B2b exact match. I can't find anything close for the obverse. Y, N, G, and 1-9 crack with polishing under jaw and down neck but not lip and nose. Much Y crack data but no match; particularly for the left side side of the Y. Guidance always appreciated.

I do not know VAMs from the dark side worth sh*!!t but it is pretty cool with those breaks. Eagle's head looks like strike doubling.
Have a great day!

Weird. A dealer said the same to me today. I was looking at the Peace he had handed me and I mentioned I was really enjoying the VAM side of collecting. He said something about the "dark side" but I didn't inquire further. I just googled it and didn't realize Morgan folks were...uppity? And here I thought it was one big happy family.

1923 D is one of my favorites for die breaks ! Your specimen does not appear to listed. VAM 1Q looks similar to die break below Y but there is no mention of die break at rim above IN. I suggest that you run this by Dr. Close.

Thanks RR. Agreed 1Q is very similar but very little supporting data. I didn't even think to look at VAMs labeled as cuds so lesson learned. I don't see a Dr. Close on the members page but will keep searching if things don't pan out.

I have to add....another purcahse today: 1878 7/8 TF...VAM 33. BP went up a bit turning to the obverse to look for the 44. Awww but man those double talons are cool. Happy Vam'r off to bed.....

One of the most striking features of the coin is that Y die break and nothing mentioned about it in the VAM 2 data. Seems 1Q should be eliminated and VAM 2 updated. The obverse description just says normal die, then goes on to suggest two different obverses. As a top 50, I would think the VAM 2 file would be more accurate. My 2 cents. Thanks gents.
