Incomplete planchet clipped 1921 vam-17 update!

Post by vamtiques » Tue Nov 30, 2021 4:02 am

This was the other Morgan I picked up, since I never seen an actual clip (with the Blakesky effect) in person before on any of these dollars, knowing these errors are quite rare in the Morgan series (correct me if I am wrong). A bonus goodie if I may add is there is a small rim cud directly below the date, and another feature on the reverse is a V shaped struck-thru on the E of States (as considered on coincommunity). Now I wonder if there is also a bit of die polish on the wreath to the left of the last A in America? I know it is in the vam-3 area of vamming but haven't quite got it yet...

Can you post a closeup picture of the small areas on either side of the eagle's right leg (viewer's left) just above the talons?
When in doubt... don't.

Can you get a closer one of just the area above the talons, like you did with the closeup of the E?
When in doubt... don't.

I like the clip. Stronger than many in that it actually shows the Blakesley effect quite well. Nice pick-up!

Ok, finally had time to get some more photos down, a closerup of a few more features. Like a closeup of the date area actually revealed another strike-thru below the 2 in the date :!:
I am wondering if that right side of the wreath shows weakness in the design die to die polish, or would this have been something done post mint?

Nice Clipped Planchet ! Weakness in lower wreath leaves is not post mint. Many 1921 Morgans exhibit this lack of detail in the lower wreath leaves. Quality control was suspect when the massive mintage of 1921 dollars occurred in a short period of time. Struck through debris may be the cause of these "smooth" leaves.

Haven't been on for a while... Just an update as I am looking at vam-3AA2 as a possible attribution? :)

Not VAM 3AA2, as there's no gouge from the nock of the arrows. Can't tell anything further from the pictures.

Ok, it took me a while, but I finally got a lock for sure on the vam number for my clipped 1921: :o :!:

Vam-17 it is!

All the details match per the description...
Now your vam-17 page could include the clipped one I found for the fun of it for an update... ;)
