1882-P Open & Closed 2 confusion

Post by Dusty Myles » Fri Aug 27, 2021 4:09 pm

I am having difficulty distinguishing between an Open 2 and a Closed 2. Cannot figure out the break between almost touch and do not touch. The picture of the date for a VAM-1 does not help. It seems to be out of focus at the surface (focused on the high points). To me, the picture seems to have an open 2. Any thoughts?

What you are referring to was early attempt at distinguishing varieties. Not really used too much in "today's" listings. Most of the dates VAM 1-4 (up to 6) were done when Morris was still in the picture.

The reason they focused on the 2 is that the 188 was in the Hubs, so I look more at placement of the 2, than open/closed...It's not a smoking gun anyway. The obverse , as it wears, will transform a closed 2 to an open 2 with one good polishing.

If you can post a couple photos of your coin, I will be happy to help you figure out what die pair you have. I dont really do VAM listings for this date, I follow marriages and stage and state of the obv and rev.
