1897-S VAM?

Post by madbirder » Thu Sep 09, 2021 11:26 am

I've got an 1897-S that I can't assign to any of the existing VAMs. None of the VAMs mention a doubled date. Some mention doubled 1-7 some 18-7 but none the full date. Of the 3 near date VAMs none fit either. My coin has a lot of polishing marks which I can't find on any of the existing VAMs and a doubled left outer leg. With as many PUPs, I thought at least one would show up. I'm hesitant to ask if this might be a new VAM but I can find nothing similar to it. Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Definitely doesn't appear to be the 9, 10 or 13.

I'll post a picture of mine separately, as I have a near date that might be a LDS VAm-10 but doesn't totally align with those - nor does it with yours.

Looking forward to hearing what more experienced eyes and brains suggest to you (and me).

1897-S VAM-2. You have the spike under the serif of 1. I have 3 of these and all have the gouges/die polish lines in the field at the chin-neck. Yours is quite a late die state as it has die cracks - none of mine have any die cracks.

Thanks, of all the things I noticed on my coin, that small spike was not one of the things I picked up.

Had to turn it around to get the light on it right but did find it so I appreciate the help. The mint mark photo on here didn't have the polishing lines that mine did so I didn't check this one too hard.

Is it worth adding some photos?

I generally think more pictures are better - this is no exception!
