Counterfeit or what?

Post by rogerg » Thu Sep 02, 2021 6:12 pm

Went to bid on this the other day and "PCGS verify" didn't like the serial number, what do you guys think? Fives in the serial number appear to be different fonts.

Coin and holder look totally OK to me.
If you contact PCGS about the database issue they're going to want you to mail in the coin.
When in doubt... don't.

I had a 1883 S MS61 and I had to send it back in. PCGS had a group of numbers that would not work. More than liklely you have one in that group.

The holder looks like one of the original PCGS or near original slabs. Could that be the reason it is not registered by PCGS?

Looks fine from here. Once in a while, older holders are missing from their database for some reason.

I don't remember the exact issue, but several years back they sent a notification of certain ranges of numbers needing to be invalidated because of something like duplicates being issued. Maybe this one was caught up in that, but I seem to think it was rattlers.

What does the back look like. If it has a hologram then this was probably one of their retro reissues, if not then it might be genuinely old.

The coin and holder look good - no indications of a counterfeit coin or tampered holder. You've probably already matched the variety.
