OT - A confusing Quarter

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sun Jul 25, 2021 5:05 pm

I've recently started going through my error coins to decide which ones to send off for encapsulation and this one appears to have too many thing going on for my under-educated mind to understand.

When I 1st looked at it, I called it a struck through retained. It looks like a mirror image section of laminate from the reverse with all UNITED and the upper portion of ST. The fragment has been double struck. The lettering is raised.

The problem is the U has a tail. I've looked and can't find a quarter that has a U with a tail. One possible hint is visible on top of the 6 in the date. I can make out an LI and the top corner of a B. Where the UNITED is following the outside of the coin, the LI is running horizontal toward the center. Its orientation would place it on the left side of the reverse. It also has the same double strike as UNITED.

I've no idea where this fragment came from.

I have poked it with a stick and it is fully fused.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jonnie

Glue, without a doubt in my mind. A little acetone and a poke with a stick will confirm this.

The mighty stick prevailed. It's back to being just a plain ol' quarter.

you really got my heart going for a second. i almost thought it was a detached big lamination struck-through with the piece being from another coin with the hope of finding the mate one day. i've seen some neat bi-coin holders with mates.

good job listening to the great advice given. sometimes people seem destined to run the gauntlet first.
