1889-P VAM-7B1 and VAM-7B2 June 2021 Revision

Post by PacificWR » Tue Jul 13, 2021 10:25 pm

Received my latest package back from LVA on the 12th and the descriptions for the 1889-P VAM-7B1 and VAM-7B2 have been updated to accurately reflect what happened. What was missing from the May update was the 1889-P VAM-7B1 and VAM-7B2 each had totally separate and different clash N events. What I find very interesting here is that, in both the VAM-7B1 and VAM-7B2 the clash N only appears on the EDS coins. When going thru the different die states for VAM-7B2, I quickly realized how tight the window for the EDS (clash N) is (see coin #4 & #5 in LVA's letter). Which leads me to think that the EDS of VAM-7B2 may turn out to be rare. Time will tell for sure. JR & JB you both should be receiving an update to LVA's article on the 1889-P VAM-23A.

More work to do. The VAM pages have been updated and photos for the MDS and LDS die states will be added very soon (thanks Andy for your great photography work ). See LVA's letter, plate photos and updated descriptions below).

Great to see LVA in agreement on different clashed n die episodes with specific revisions to illustrate each progression. Die clash events are very difficult to interpret without all the pieces (as you know). Persistence is KEY. It took me twenty years to find that second monster error/variety Bicentennial IKE with identical clashed letters D WE.

Superb research Wayne !!

Thanks Roger. You nailed it. One thing that LVA did not mention in the letter, that on coin #5 not only was the clash N faded away but, so were the clash from the left wreath to the Eagle's right wing and the bat wing clashes on the Reverse.

Just found a 1889-P VAM-7B2 without the collar clash, half of the clash N is faded away and on the Reverse, the clash from the left wreath to the Eagle's right wing has faded away as well as the bat wing clashes. Man...this is a very very tight window. This die state as well as the others will be added to the VAM page soon. Thanks Andy for your great photography work!
