AT LAST!! – a wide reeding in PL

Post by DHalladay » Wed Jun 30, 2021 9:16 pm

Finding a PL 1921-P wide reeding – any wide reeding – in an unattributed holder has been a cherrypicking goal of mine for several years. I held out only microscopic hope for success, though, since there’s no way of knowing whether the surface PUPs for each wide reeding VAM were on the dies in their PL/DMPL infancy, or if they happened later.

And because only 7 PLs and 1 DMPL have been attributed by ANACS, NGC and PCGS combined.

In late June a PCGS MS63PL 1921-P went up on eBay. The pictures were good. They were big. They were more than adequate. My pulse quickened when I saw the D1 reverse. I checked the obverse and immediately knew it was a VAM 26 wide reeding:

Another, closer look at the reverse made it definite:

Six days of auction-watching angst followed, capped off with a last second nuclear bid that turned out to be very unnecessary.

FYI: This makes no sense:
– VAM 26 is rated R-4 and the SSDC population is 18.
– VAM 26A is rated R-6 and the SSDC population is 19.

I’ve been looking for a VAM 26 for six years; I still needed one for my 1921-P date set at SSDC. VAM 26A is tremendously easier to find, thanks to easy-to-notice denticle beveling over ST and sometimes OF. I’ve found several of those.

Very Happy for you Dennis.
WTG
It's always great to find one that took a lot of time to find, no matter what the VAM.
And a PL 21 is something hard to come by.

Congrats! Maybe Squirrel will let you drool on his PL VAM 4. Of course, knowing that you will, maybe he won't let you.

Congrats Dennis.. Having been through the watching and waiting and finally winning a long sought VAM, the postal system wait can be agonizing. Also pretty nerve-wracking hoping the correct coin was sent when it's just a common uncertified version like my last 1891 o pick was. Very nice pictures as well.... again, congrats!

Dh
Congrats , and The Great thing it was in a PCGS holder , I always worry when I purchase a coin that is from NGC or other
TPG's that it will not cross over to PCGS . But it looks like you got the Grand Slam on the Ebay auction . Yep Im sure it was a nail biter for you , The wait until its in your hands . But Perfect and Excellent !!! Great story and I totally can relate !!
Long search is over for you on that one coin . So off to the Next Quest !!!

GOOD EYE and find, Dennis,
I've put the 1921 vams 36 and 36A on my list to look for.

Stop looking Bert. Those were eliminated and changed to 5/5A.

I meant to say vams 26 and 26A, for the Infrequently Reeded, Trip Chin/Nose.

Good catch. 21 Pl's are not easy to find.
