Dan Carr Anniversary Dollar

Post by vampicker » Mon Jun 21, 2021 7:45 pm

I just got my example today, a faithful recreation of the 1921-D Morgan struck over a genuine 21-D dollar. I'll be curious to see how his work compares to the mint's 2021 recreations.

Got mine last week too. He must have accumulated orders and recently minted them. It is nice. Gotta box up a Carr submission to ANACS this week. The accumulation has gotten to be a dozen or so.

Why would a TPG deal with them?

Wouldn't they at best be counterstrikes?

Carr characterizes them as fantasy overstrike tokens.

They represent a very minor part of his token business and are avidly collected. Some are so-called dollars, but the overwhelming majority, by declared strike populations, are not overstrikes but on fresh planchets.

I doubt ANACS and ICG are getting rich on these or all of Carr's products. They just are servicing the token collector market. I cannot imagine they amount to a lot of business. ANACS, in particular, is located in Colorado where his base of operations also resides.

Got my example today. Very, very nice. Apparently not for all tastes, but I like it a lot! Now I am trying to figure out what VAM it was overstruck on

It would have been interesting for him to only overstrike the field, since they started off as 21-D Morgans, anyway. The overstrike merely adds the text and somewhat blurs the design. Of course, it also removes all the bag marks, so I can see that being a reason to strike the whole thing.
