1883-CC Need Help Attributing
1883-CC Need Help Attributing
I can't seem to but it all together for this coin. The 1st 8 in the date is doubled and has a fairly large die chip at the left where the loops join. There appears to be a die chip at the bottom left of the 1 but could be PMD. The MM is slanted and CC/CC. I don't see any polish line in the left wing but there is some doubling at the top of the wreath. The T in Liberty is doubled at the top left and there are a couple of horizonal polish lines around Her ear. Please offer any opinions and thanks for your help.

Is there a dot like gouge near the denticles between the 2nd and 3rd right stars?

Is this the gouge you ask about? Sorry it took so long to reply.

Re: 1883-CC Need Help Attributing
Nope. Looks like you have a stage of VAM 3.

Re: 1883-CC Need Help Attributing
Yeah, they get fainter in later stages. Nothing definitive jumped out in your pictures. It's more about what's not there. No line in the wing, so the VAM 5 series is out. The mintmark position eliminates VAM 4. It also doesn't look quite right for VAM 8 and the diagnostic scratch from the e of we doesn't show in your pictures. That leaves the reverse shared by VAM 2 and the VAM 3 stages. We established it's not VAM 2 because the 'dot' gouge isn't present. That leaves you with VAM 3, and from the look of it a later stage after the VAM 3A clashing fades. There are dio cracks illustrated in the large images of VAM 3A. See if they match your coin.

Re: 1883-CC Need Help Attributing
I believe with all your help we have narrowed it down to VAM-3. I now see the die cracks on the pics of VAM-3 that I can't see on 3A. Also the cap vee on the full reverse of 3 matches my coin(the 3A doesn't look the same). This isn't a great coin, with well circulated PMD and cleaning, but it is part of my Grandfather's collection so it is important to me. Thanks again for taking time to help.vampicker wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 1:26 pmYeah, they get fainter in later stages. Nothing definitive jumped out in your pictures.
