Re: Something not seen everyday?
That's really cool!
As for value, per forum rules, this should be asked in the "What's it worth" board.

Re: Something not seen everyday?
is it die failure or planchet? Holder says strike 1 then strike 2...

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my.........Ahh........Uhmm........something, something, something.....

Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
Very cool mated pair. Don't think PCGS has a price guide for errors. I'd say that number you saw is for generic example of the date.

Re: Something not seen everyday?
Planchet defect. Likely created when an inclusion of copper oxide (scale)was rolled into a strip, and a blank cut. The label is misleading in that the coin was struck normally and fell apart sometime after bagging.

Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
isn't this the northern nevada coins specimen?
Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
It would be nearly criminal if they took it out of the GSA holder

This was clearly split after strike. There's no stretching of elements towards the broken edge

Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
Yes, and for nearly 20 years.
The combination of Series 20 on the insert tag and 7-digit serial numbers (3450668 and 3450669) means they were graded before February 2002, which is when PCGS switched to 8-digit serial numbers.
When in doubt... don't.

Agreed vamsterdam
I say they should go directly to jail don’t collect 200.00, no get out of jail free card!!
Has anyone ever seen another similar
Coin?
Glad there was NO quality control at the CC mint that day, and that it survived all these years later!
Great piece of Morgan history!

Not pushing their web site, but I found the "error gallery" fascinating, https://northernnevadacoin.com/error-gallery/
Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
I can't swear to this thing having been in a GSA hard pack. I seem to recall them using an image of this with the GSA holder as part of their advertising in years past, but that may have just been marketing. I think the only other Morgan error that compares is the full mirror brockage piece John Dannruether had on display at multiple shows a few years ago.

An interesting side note is that there are many complaints of nickels breaking during use or when counted. The Philadelphia Mint was buying blanks from contractors including Wharton's business.vampicker wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 3:19 pmThis was clearly split after strike. Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
Yup, I've seen examples. Usually when a coin is split after strike, it's an extreme form of lamination and you get an obverse and reverse mated pair. This version is FAR more rare.

Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
They have a nice collection of errors. I bought a nice UNC. 1882 CC from Morganman. It is a 2 error coin. A partial collar strike with a struck through piece of wire on the reverse.lured_in_again wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 3:50 pmNot pushing their web site, but I found the "error gallery" fascinating, https://northernnevadacoin.com/error-gallery/

Out of collar
Paid $350.00Re: Carson City not seen everyday?
Sure would've been nice for them to use a special holder for both parts to be displayed together, which would also serve to keep them together. Peace Roy
