"How Coins Were Minted A Century Ago" [VIDEO]
Alonzi VW 2.0!

Interesting and will probably help some collectors better visualize what occurred at the Philadelphia Mint in the 1910-1920 period. There are some goofy edits and the Pyx situation is entirely wrong - but it is clear about how detached workers became when handling precious metal ingots, planchets and coins. (The original in available at NARA.)

Thanks Chris, very interesting.

One thought kept screaming through my mind as I watched this: The days before OSHA were much, MUCH different for workers.
And another was: "Who in heaven's name thought that music was a good idea?!"

When in doubt... don't.

The hand reaching in to pull out blanks is especially cringe-worthy.
Use of wire cages around press flywheels didn't come into use until the new Philadelphia Mint opened in 1901. Archives include several letters about employees losing body parts to machinery.

my audio isn't working so i guess i lucked out. pretty nice to able to watch something like this. i was pretty shocked about the guy grabbing ingots straight from the tank with his bare hands.
