O/T Elk Hunt

So, archery hunting open last Saturday. I drew a cow tag this year so will be hunting with a rifle but lots of my friends archery hunt. One friend called me yesterday late afternoon to ask if the elk had been in my field lately. I said I haven't seen them yet but the neighbors say there are 7 bulls in the herd. Later in the late, late afternoon, I'm looking out the kitchen window at two nice bulls, both spikes and one really tall, standing about 20 yards from the house. I call my buddy back and tell him I'm looking at two bulls in my backyard feasting on my apples. He's out hunting but heads my way. When he gets here there are two bulls and three cows and I'm wondering why the whole herd is not down. I give him my best guess on how to get close without them seeing him and he heads down around the house. To make a long story shorter, he gets the biggest bull and it drops dead down in my field. I take the pickup out and drag it to the shop and the cooler. I have a large walkin cooler in the shop and I have around 50 animals come in each year. Pretty easy hunt and my cow tag is for my property too. Being an old guy now, shooting them from my deck is helpful.

We have plenty of deer too. Along with coyotes, cougars, black bear, Bob cats, and many other critters. I've been blessed to live where I live. And yes the meat is really good.

I almost ran into a Elk while driving back from climbing Mt Church in Idaho a few weeks back, was just outside of Stanley Idaho and ran right across the road out of no where .

on occasion we have them come down to the valley by where I live as well. Usually colder winters and assuming when the wolves push them into the valley . While hiking last winter I saw a wolf tailing 7 elk , I am sure its buddies where around somewhere.

I filled my cow tag in wyoming this past weekend as well. Now time to head to the high country to chase deer.

Very neat. I've always wanted to do some hunting but never have for whatever reason. I've heard the game animals here in California taste like crap anyway. Something about their diet.

Diet can be a factor in taste but more important is taking care of the meat after you bring it down. I am on my third "walk in cooler" and this one is done right. You cure the meat for a week at under 40 degrees (mine goes from 32 to 38) consistant and it will taste good. Then you have to learn to cook it. Here is a great receipe for venison or elk steak:

Best Elk and Venison steak!
1. Cut the steak in strips about 1 inch wide and thin 1/4 to 3/8 in. It cooks better in strips.
2. Make a batter of two eggs and some milk. Mix well.
3. Dip the steaks in the batter and coat with Progresso "Italian" Bread Crumbs. You must use Progresso Italian - no substitutes. The knock-offs just don’t have it!
4. Fry in a fry pan with fairly hot to medium oil but not too hot. Use canola or light vegetable oil - canola is best. Do not use olive oil or butter or a heavy vegetable oil like Wesson as it changes the flavor.
5. Fry them fast turning them over so as not to burn.
You will not believe how good they are.
