1885-o Morgan VAM-24 with Belly button.
1885-o Morgan VAM-24 with Belly button.
I see no picture on the VAM-24 - 1885-o page
Though it is mentioned and has a LVA document
BELLY BUTTON pic
Definitely odd and very visible without visual aids - Picture is straight from my phone.
Feel free to use as see fit.

Got back an 1891 o with the belly button designation from a submission to ANACS last year. I'd have to look and see what the VAM number was. If I remember correctly it was in MS 60 or 61. I did request the designation on the submission form.

They tend to show up on the later date ones, but any issue that's known for bad strikes can have them. They're not so much striking errors as striking deficiencies, although they could also be caused by being struck through schmutz. Definitely not something to use in an attribution, though. How does the obverse look?

I have a neat obv strike-thru v24 with the Bellybutton rev. A large piece of wire or something that mimics an H-10... I call it my "Happy Scarface." When I pull it out again I'll post pics here if I remember.

Decent strike, so could be strike-thru or a planchet divot dead center.

A 'belly button' is not tied to any variety. It is not something in the die itself. It is a striking error. I believe the prevailing theory now is the dies were set slightly too far apart. There are other configurations of this phenomenon in other series, like the weird hourglass shape you occasionally find on the President's cheek on Kennedy Half Dollars. For Morgans, the 'belly button' is most commonly found in the New Orleans issues, and 1885 is by far the most common date.

Wait, so the bellybutton isn't exclusive to v24? Good to know.
