1884-o ? 37a2 Does it matter?

Post by indian4 » Wed Aug 19, 2020 1:17 am

This would typically be a 37a2 I found the rev to be pretty badly cracked. My questions are :

1. Do any of the cracks show displacement other than on the obverse. I plan on using this coin for myself for comparison.

2. Does it matter other than the cracks are interesting?

Chime in Roger I found you have a broad base of knowledge.

Any help is always appreciated.

Reverse die crack between S and O (STATES OF) shows tiny die chips . The other die crack at ED (UNITED) also shows tiny die chips developing along the crack. These chips are typically an indication of die crack progression . However, there is no field displacement (yet) that can be seen on these two reverse locations.

I find cracks on coins interesting. This coin supposedly came out of a complete roll, all the same date and mint. It would be interesting to see if any of the others had cracks like this.

Die cracks portray the blueprint for many interesting varieties. My post on Key Date 1921 Sleeper Pick contains several obverse photos of a die crack extending from nose - lips - chin - 2nd left star. This crack caught my attention when I first viewed the coin because I didn't recognize it as one I had ever seen on a 1921 P. This PUP lead me straight to the VAM 8B Page. Die crack maps on the Page prove to be a tremendous tool in attribution. Scribble VAMS can sometimes be identified just by their die crack maps.

Roger, I remember reading that these coins were originally transported from the mint in bags which makes sense. At what point would they have gone into rolls? I'm guessing at banks and payroll offices?

Since the owner and operator of "Crack City" has not given the link in this thread as of yet, I will do the honors! I visit the City often and YOU should as well! :) I think I unintentionally started building this as a set a couple of years ago. I Love it! And....more are considered for inclusion regularly from what I understand. Enjoy!

Don't go hangin out on street corners smoking cigars and drinking beer.

Wait a minute, that sounds pretty good.
